Local Businesses Help Kick Off Adult Soccer Leagues

The Help Key and Grand Avenue Saloon in Port are both sponsoring teams in the newly launched leagues, which have drawn players from as far as Milwaukee and Sheboygan.  By Lyssa Beyer, June 15, 2012

After launching an intiative in May to start up adult soccer leagues in Port Washington, Jennifer Huettl is now happy to say the sport has taken off — in a lot of ways.

Not only are teams forming from as far away as Milwaukee and Sheboygan — as well as including some players from closer by, such as Cedarburg — but some area businesses have also stepped up to sponsor the teams.

The Help Key and Grand Avenue Saloon in Port are both sponsoring teams, Huettl said, and more are coming down the wire. The teams currently play Tuesday and Thursday nights, with the current season running through July 26; Games are played at the fields behind St. Peter's and McDonald's.

On Thursday, several teams met to challenge each other; pictured with this article are the Port Teachers FC (all players on the team are actually teachers), and The Townies.

It's not too late to sign up to play; spots for individuals and teams are available. Visit the website for more information, and also find a schedule as well as team standings.

Huettl said another season will start in fall, and she hopes to host some sort of a charity tournament between seasons.
